Quality of Service Guarantees in Virtual Circuit Switched Networks
نویسنده
چکیده
We review some recent results regarding the problem of providing deterministic quality of service guarantees in slot-based virtual circuit switched networks. The concept of a service curve is used to partially characterize the service that virtual circuit connections receive. We nd that service curves provide a convenient framework for managing the allocation of performance guarantees. In particular, bounds on end-to-end performance measures can be simply obtained in terms of service curves and burstiness constraints on arriving traac. Service curves can be allocated to the connections, and we consider scheduling algorithms that can support the allocated service curves. Such an approach provides the required degree of isolation between the connections in order to support performance guarantees, without precluding statistical multiplexing. Finally, we examine the problem of enforcing burstiness constraints in slot-based networks.

Quality of Service Management in Integrated Services Networks
Service curves were introduced earlier as a convenient framework for management and allocation of end-to-end deterministic quality of service guarantees in virtual circuit switched networks operating with essentially no transmission errors, e.g. ATM networks. A service curve can be thought of as a generalized bandwidth specification, which simultaneously characterizes both latency and throughpu...
متن کاملScheduling for Quality of Service
We propose a new scheduling policy, called SCED (Service Curve-based Earliest Deadline rst), which provides guarantees to virtual circuits in packet-switched networks. This scheduling policy is developed for a general framework for service provisioning based on Service Curves proposed by Cruz. Instead of explicitly guaranteeing a speciic quality of service measure, such as maximum delay, SCED g...
متن کاملOn Using Virtual-Circuit Networks for File Transfers
It has become clear that widespread collaboration in the scientific community, which can increasingly be characterized by geographically distributed and large-scale projects, requires predictable network service [1]. Predictable network service needed by applications such as large file transfers, remote visualization, and remote instrumentation can only be offered on connection-oriented network...
متن کاملA Methodology for Virtual Path and Virtual Network Bandwidth Assignment in Broadband Networks with QOS Guarantees
We introduce a methodology for establishing a connection between two arbitrary nodes of a multiclass broadband network that secures suucient resources at every intermediate node along the selected route, and thereby guarantees quality of service (QOS). We describe how a Virtual Path (VP) mechanism may be implemented within our framework, and compare the performance achieved by such a scheme wit...
متن کاملDynamic multipath routing in networks and switches carrying connection-oriented traffic
We propose a dynamic multipath routing (DMPR) scheme to improve resource utilization of a network for a given quality of service (QoS) in carrying delay sensitive traffic. The proposed scheme takes advantage of available alternate routes which can be used beneficially in communication networks or switches, without increasing the network latency. Through simulation study of circuit-switched, vir...
